When we lived in New England, I used to love watching the seasons change. I loved the cool, crisp feel in the air. I loved the foggy mornings, listening to the foghorn sounding in the distance, and enjoying the stillness until the sun broke through the fog. I loved curling up next to the fireplace, listening to the fire crackle and the logs break.
My father used to work so hard to keep the yard free of the falling leaves. My sister and I made it our mission to jump in the leaf piles and spread them all over the yard again when he wasn't looking. (Now I can see how annoying that was - but he always made time to laugh with us.)
My parents used to bake apple pies together. My mom made the best pie crust, and my dad had his own secret recipe for the filling. It's been years since they made one together, but I can still remember how delicious it was and how much love they put into it for us.
On the really cool mornings, when the first hint of frost appeared on the windows, my mother used to make soup for lunch. She would let each of us pick a can for ourselves. Tomato was my favorite, and my sister's choice was always Campbell's double noodle. It was soup from a can, but those two soups still hold special memories for me.
Now that I'm in Florida, I look forward to those rare days as a reprieve from the summer heat. It's not quite the same, so I try to recreate the things I loved so much about autumn back home.
sipping hot apple cider
the smell of a cinnamon broom in the air
visiting a pumpkin patch
baking pies
decorating my house to celebrate the season (unfortunately, these are not my house)
thick fuzzy socks to warm chilled toes (again, not my socks)
I have so many wonderful memories. I wish Will could have the same experience of growing up in New England, but I can't wait to show how all the best parts of autumn in the South. After all, it's time spent with family that creates the best memories.

How funny is that? We were literally just writing our new posts at the same time and posted the same picture! Too funny!

I live in Florida now too but grew up in Missouri. I miss so many things about the fall.
ReplyDeleteToday however..for the first time in a very long time I went to let the dogs out when I woke up and it was cooler outside than inside! I rushed around to open my windows and enjoy maybe an hour or so of "cooler" weather. I think on the weather station it said it was 69 or something..not real cool but cooler than what we've been having!
I miss the leaves changing, the first snow, going to football games in sweaters, hot soup, etc.etc.etc.....
Great post!
I would hate to be away from fall. It's my favourite season. The leaves haven't changed yet but when they do, I will be outside with my camera taking pictures.
ReplyDeleteWhere I am from, we used to go apple picking every year. I forgot just how much I loved it. Hopefully with my mom visiting next weekend, I can go.
Thanks for a lovely post making me excited for fall :)
